Construction on the new Raiders stadium began in earnest on September 18, 2017, as crews mobilized to prepare the site. A joyous groundbreaking ceremony was held on November 13, featuring NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Raiders owner Mark Davis, along with Raiders legends and local dignitaries. In the following months, construction crews labored daily to excavate and shape the stadium bowl, blasting away caliche rock. 

Their work transformed a nondescript lot into the foundations of what would become the Raiders’ desert home. In a playful act of rivalry, a worker even briefly planted a Kansas City Chiefs flag at the 50-yard line, though it was soon removed. By August 2018, the stadium’s address was changed to honor Raiders icon Al Davis.

The Stadium’s Design

The ten-level Allegiant Stadium features an ETFE roof and a sleek silver and black exterior lined with light-up strips. Massive retractable curtain-like windows offer views overlooking the Las Vegas Strip. Inside sits a lush, roll-in natural grass field, allowing the space to transform for various events. 

Facing Interstate 15 rises an imposing 275-foot media mesh video screen. The north endzone area contains an 85-foot torch housing a flame in memory of beloved Raiders owner Al Davis. The stadium design brings modern technology and amenities together with touches, paying tribute to the team’s history and identity. The stadium has 2,700 parking spaces and 6,000 more nearby. And one more thing – though the official capacity of the Allegiant Stadium is 65,000, it’s designed to expand to over 71,000. On the other hand, the venue can seat no more than 61,000 for a soccer game.
