In the spring of 2014, the future home of the Vegas Golden Knights broke ground in Las Vegas. After the demolition of the old buildings and excavation of the oval area, construction on T-Mobile Arena began. Over the next year, workers gradually pieced together the structure, placing the final steel beam in May 2015.
The following January, T-Mobile purchased naming rights to the new arena, which would host its grand opening in April. Las Vegas natives – The Killers, Shamir, and Wayne Newton performed at the glittering unveiling concert. This was preceded by the entertainment provided by country stars Martina McBride and Cam at the soft opening the night before.
Later, in 2016, the arena welcomed its anchor tenant, the AHL’s newly formed Vegas Golden Knights. Team owner Bill Foley shrewdly negotiated part ownership of T-Mobile Arena itself, purchasing a 15 percent stake from MGM and AEG for $35 million that September.
T-Mobile Arena has hosted several major sporting events beyond just the home games of the Vegas Golden Knights and UFC fights. The passionate fans packing the stands have cheered on high-profile boxing matches, like when Canelo Álvarez went toe-to-toe with Gennady Golovkin and Floyd Mayweather Jr. battled Conor McGregor.
The arena vibrated with excitement when the Golden Knights claimed the Western Conference championship in 2018, securing T-Mobile Arena as the site for three thrilling games of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Washington Capitals, including the Cup-winning match that gave the Capitals their first franchise Stanley Cup.
Beyond sports, T-Mobile Arena has hosted star-studded entertainment events like the glitzy Academy of Country Music Awards, the iconic iHeartRadio Music Festival, the Latin Grammy Awards, and the Billboard Music Awards, to name a few.
